Vakarufalhi has a lot to offer – great beaches, excellent snorkelling on the house reef just off the beach, spacious rooms and a natural, lush interior. For many years, the island has held a great reputation with those who visit the Maldives regularly. We loved the informal atmosphere combined with great food, accommodation, beaches and marine life.  The island was redeveloped in 2009 and relaunched as TClub Vakarufalhi. The main change is the addition of 25 Water Villas, although the beach villas have also been refurbished and a new Duniye Spa has been built over the water.  Since the re-launch, the resort is receiving excellent feedback – 50 out of 73 rate as ‘Excellent’ currently on Tripadvisor.

The Island

Located in the south-east of Ari Atoll, Vakarufalhi is a fine looking resort. Small, almost round with perfect beaches and a very good house reef encircling the island. The coral reef is situated at different distances from the shore on either side of theisland, allowing for swimming and sport in a wonderful lagoon on one side, where the shore slopes gently away, while on the other the reef is within easy swimming distance.

The buildings are well designed, are of a high quality and feature natural materials. The Beach Villas, which are mainly detached are particularly large and were completely refurbished in 2009. The Water Villas are modern and a new addition to the island when it re-launched in December 2009. There is plenty of vegetation, including a large number of tall, mature palms. This is an unpretentious resort offering quality facilities in a beautiful, natural surrounding.

Since relaunching as TClub Vakarufalhi, the resort has become primarily Italian focussed.  Expect to find at least 50% of guests to be Italian with the remaining being a mix of British, French, Japanese, Swiss and German.

The brand TClub stands for Tea and Culture. Experts regularly visit the resort and provide information ranging from the local Marine Life to Culture and Astronomy. It has nothing to do with the existence of a Clubbing type environment!

In an attempt to contain the extent of sand movement around the island during the monsoons, coral ‘groyne’ walls have been built in the sea and are visible during low tide.  Whilst this may seem like an unwelcome distraction on first arrival, we did find that they were soon forgotten about and did not detract from our enjoyment of the island.

Located in Faafu Atoll, south west of Male, Filitheyo is the only resort in this atoll. It is one of the larger islands, taking around 30 minutes to walk around the perimeter. The dense interior which is a maze of mature palm groves, makes this a particularly attractive island. There is excellent snorkelling on the house reef which is easily accessible from the beach. For the complete package of great accommodation, food and snorkelling at reasonable prices, Filitheyo is still our island of choice.

    The Island

Filitheyo is a relatively large island, measuring 900 x 300 metres and with a total of 109 Beach Villas plus 16 Water Villas. The interior is wonderfully lush with extensive mature palm groves and sandy paths criss crossing the island. The house reef is stunning and surrounds around 75% of the island with easy access from the beach. In general, the beaches at Filitheyo are wide and fine, although one side of the island has suffered a degree of erosion. The buildings are stylish and well designed, complimenting the natural feel to the island. The Family Villas are a real bonus, offering a two bedroom villa with inter-connecting door.

There are plenty of luxuries here too, providing the perfect combination of a high quality resort retaining natural charm and character. The food is certainly one of the highlights at Filitheyo. It is consistently superb with a huge selection of dishes catering for a wide range of tastes. We particularly love the various local Maldivian fish curries on offer most evenings. Desserts in the Maldives can sometimes be a disappointment: but not in Filitheyo. Fresh fruit sorbets, profiteroles, apple crumble and peanut ice cream, to name but a few, are on offer. Facilities include a very attractive infinity swimming pool with swim-up bar and sunken library where internet access can be obtained for a small charge.

Filitheyo offers excellent value for money and remains very popular with both our clients and our own Family. For high standards of food and accommodation and great snorkelling at a reasonable price, you can’t go wrong with Filitheyo.

Our first ever island and the reason why we fell in love with the Maldives.  Angaga is a simple, no frills island that oozes natural Maldivian character.  The ambience is relaxed and informal with sand on the floor of the restaurant and bar areas.  The snorkelling on the house reef is excellent and easily accessible from the beach.

    The Island

Located in south Ari Atoll, Angaga is a small island measuring 300 x 150 metres and taking just 10 minutes to walk around the perimeter.  It is a fine looking resort with good beaches and plenty of palm trees.  One side of the island is surrounded by a coral reef while the other has a wide lagoon.  The buildings are well designed, discreet and natural in appearance with thatched roofs. The absence of coral walls (groynes) built into the sea means the views are uninterrupted, but this does mean that the beach tends to move around the island with the changing seasons.  This shouldn’t cause too much of a problem as being such a small island, it is never too far to find the perfect spot.

    Transfer

By seaplane, taking around 25 minutes followed by a short dhoni transfer from the floating ‘airport’ to the island.

    Accomodation

There are 70 rooms in total at Angaga, 50 Beach Villas and 20 Water Bungalows. Two of the beach villas are double storey with an additional upstairs bedroom and therefore particularly suitable for families. Unfortunately, it is not possible to reserve these in advance as they are allocated on arrival according to availability.

All villas are detached and have air conditioning, satellite TV, telephone, hair dryer, hot and cold water, mini fridge, traditional ‘gifilli’ bathroom, bamboo furniture, tea/coffee making facilities  and a Maldivian swing on the terrace. The water bungalows were completed in 2003 and have direct access to the lagoon and a glass bottom table for viewing the underwater life. Rooms can accommodate one extra bed.

    Facilities

House Reef: is 7-8 metres from the beach for two thirds of the island. It is one of the best house reefs in the area with a huge array of fish and live corals.  There are a number of marked cut through channels for access over the reef.  On the other third, there is a large, gradually sloping, sandy bottomed lagoon, ideal for watersports.

Diving: Angaga dive base operated by Sub Aqua, is one of the most award winning dive base in the Maldives. Besides all the spectacular flora and fauna you can also see as a highlight the giant whale sharks.

Water Sports: Catamaran sailing, Canoeing, Wind Surfing & Kite surfing are all available at the Water Sports Centre for a charge.

Gym: there is a small gym with Bicycle, Treadmill, Multi use gym system and weights.

Shop: There is a small shop selling snacks and souvenirs.

Spa: The island provides the original Balinese first class Spa with a range of  special treatments and package options.

Child Minding: This can normally be arranged on an informal basis with a member of staff for an additional charge.

    Eating & Drinking

Half Board, Half Board Plus, Full Board and All Inclusive are offered at Angaga.

Main Restaurant All main meals are taken here and are good quality buffet style.  The restaurant is open sided with sand on the floor and a lovely view to the ocean where dolphins can often be seen passing by.
