Emerald Isle is situated on an island on the banks of the backwaters, around 10 kilometres outside of Alleppey. From the moment you step onto the dug out canoe which transports you across the river to the homestay, you enter into a tranquil world of peace and harmony. Your hosts, Vinod and his Family will welcome you into their home which dates back 150 years.  Emerald Isle is ideal for those wanting to relax, the extensive beautiful grounds and tempting hammocks are ideal to do just that. You might spot the local ‘Toddy Tapper’ climbing the coconut trees and taste some of the fresh toddy! Vinod can provide you with a number of walking routes where you can visit local temples, villages and schools.

Accommodation

There are only 5 rooms (All Air-conditioned) for guests and each has its own en-suite ‘open to the sky’ shower bathroom with all modern facilities. To retain privacy, each room has its own entrance from the central courtyard.

The house itself dates back 150 years and retains its original architectural features, mostly in teak, with splendid wood carvings. There is also a fine Ara, the timber storeroom used in former times for the golden harvest of rice – golden because the island’s lush green paddy fields turn gold at the time of the harvest.

Dining

This is where the Homestay experience comes into its own.  Meals are a communal affair with fellow guests and served in the main Family dining room.  The ladies of the house prepare and serve the meals but do not eat with guests.

All meals are traditional Keralan specialities using locally-grown spices and herbs, local fish – Karimeen Pollichathu, Avoli Fry, Neimeen Curry – and chicken and duck dishes which are a specialty of the region, as well as dosa, appam-egg roast, puttu-kadala for vegetarian dishes.  Expect lavish banquets, often impressively served on fresh banana leaves.

Food can prepared according to the level of spice that guests prefer.

For those that would like to continue the experience at home, free cookery demonstrations can be arranged with the Family.  We did and I have even managed to source fresh banana leaves to serve a traditional Keralan feast back home!

Newly opened in 2010, the Old Lighthouse Bristow Hotel is a luxury, heritage boutique hotel with direct access to Fort Kochi’s only remaining stretch of golden sands. The Hotel was originally the residence of the founder and first chairman of the Cochin port, Sir Robert Bristow. The main building dates back to 1929 and also served as the lighthouse. The original lighhouse mast still stands on the property.

The main restaurant opens onto a terrace facing directly out to sea, perfect for watching the passing ships coming in to and out of Cochin harbour. In our opinion, this is a good mid-range choice for boutique style and great views.

Garden Rooms
These are four rooms set in verdant gardens with a lavish veranda and typical plantation home interior having a view of the Chithirapuram valley below.

Cottages
Six exquisite rooms owing their names to the vegetation around (Cardamom, Coffee and Vanilla ). The cottages are large having an area of 600 square feet each. Even the king sized beds, the huge bathroom and heavy furniture leave enough space to swing a few hats. The huge window frames do justice to the picture perfect mountains beyond.

Planter’s Villa Room

Travancore Heritage, a beachfront resort  set in 14 acres of lush green coconut gardens, is located at Chowara, south of Kovalam, near Trivandrum. The resort stands on a high cliff overlooking the Arabian Sea and a long wide beach, frequented more by local fishermen than tourists. The resort was conceived and developed as a heritage property which brings to life the age-old traditional architectural splendour of the region with its typical timber houses and ‘Nalukettus’ cottages with tiled roofing.  An ideal choice for a stop-over before flying to Maldives or for a beach resort which gives easy access to Kerala’s other main attractions.

Location

About 20kms (30 minutes drive) from Trivandrum Airport. Walking distance to the beach.

In our opinion, Chowara is a much better option than Kovalam itself which has quite a touristy, commercial feel to it.  You will not find throngs of people on the beach at Chowara.  Instead, you will find local traditional fishing boats dotted along the miles of sand.  There are a number of local fishing villages close by and this is a great spot to watch the boats bring in the days catch and fishing nets being expertly manoevered in the ocean.  The Travancore Heritage provides a great vantage point to observe these activities, especially first thing in the morning.

Kovalam and Trivandrum are within easy reach for sighseeing and shopping.

Please note that although there is a lift available for access to/from the beach, the resort is built on an incline and does involve some fairly steep slopes and a number of steps to reach the main restaurant .

Beach Grove x 24
The beach grove block is located at the foot of the 120 ft. cliff  and is slightly set back from the beach, beyond the swimming pool.  A lift facility is available to move between the different levels of the resort.

Dining

We were impressed with the standard of food at the Travancore Heritage.  The main restaurant ‘Open House’ has a pleasant location by the main pool and has partially open sides allowing a breeze to flow through.  There is also a beachside seafood restauarant and a dedicated Ayurvedic dining area.

‘Open House’:  The ‘open house’ restaurant has open arches on the front sides and overlooks the swimming pool. In the main dining hall, the exquisite decorative wooden ceiling is some 100 years old, sourced from the marriage hall of a feudal chief in Tamil Nadu. The restaurant offers multi-cuisine fare with the specialty of seafood and local ethnic cuisine and can serve 80 guests at a time.

‘Ocean Grill’:  ideally situated between the beach grove and the sea. With thatched roofing and sea breezes, this restaurant specialises in sea food.

Ayurveda restaurant: There is a separate Ayurveda Restaurant which only serves ayurveda dishes.  Combined with a series of ayurvedic spa treatments, this provides an ideal opportunity to indulge in this traditional Keralan healing remedy.

A 300 year-old building that has long been a heritage monument of Cochin, now reopened as a boutique hotel. Built in the Dutch style of architecture with hints of Portuguese influences, it was the first hotel of old Cochin. Later it became a residential home to employees of English tea-broking firms until it was left unused for a period of time.  Now restored to its former glory, the Old Harbour Hotel is a stylish fusion of old and new and has an enviable location by Vasco De Gamma Square and the Chinese Fishing Nets. Rooms are large, airy and stylish, the garden is delightful and the fabulous swimming pool is a real attraction.

Location

Excellent central location in the heart of historic Fort Cochin, very close to the Chinese Fishing Nets. Some of the Suite rooms have views across to the sea and the fishing nets.

All major attractions in Fort Cochin are within easy walking distance.

Old Harbour Hotel is 45 km from Cochin airport and takes around 1 hour to transfer by car.

Facilities

Swimming Pool: The raised granite infinity pool is a real asset of the hotel.  At 20m long,  it is large enough for laps or refreshing dips. A terrace with sun loungers surround the pool, perfect for unwinding after a busy day sight seeing in Cochin.

Spa Treatments: There is a small Ayurvedic spa centre within the hotel where treatments and massages are available. In-room treatments can also be arranged on request.

Yoga: early morning sessions are often held on the rooftop for a revitalising start to the day.

Internet Access: is available at the hotel

Accommodation

A total of thirteen rooms located in either the main building or the garden annexe.  Attention to detail is evident with the provision of  organic soaps and lotions in the bathrooms, comfortable robes and slippers as well as plenty of bottled water. All rooms have been beautifully restored and decorated in a stylish, natural fashion with the addition of local antiques and artwork.

Rooms: each room is named after the various old streets of Fort Cochin and are plush with high ceilings and either look into a courtyard with a fountain or over the ancient Chinese Fishing nets.

Garden Cottages: have open-to-the-sky showers, a veranda and views of the lily pond and beautiful garden.

Suites: The 3 sprawling suites, complete with four-poster beds, are particularly luxurious; the Bastion Suite has a romantic swing chair for two, while the Princess Suite has a private balcony and is the only room with a bath.

Dining

Dining at Old Harbour Hotel is a delight, particularly at night when the garden is lit up to create a magical atmosphere.  The restaurant has an indoor dining area that spills out onto a terrace with tables dotted around the garden and under the ancient mango tree.  There is a good range of Western and local cuisine to suit most palettes but the speciality has to be the fish which is freshly caught just across the road!  There is a special seafood menu and barbecue every night in the garden. We also enjoyed the duck curry – another Keralan speciality. All vegetables are organically grown and there is an emphasis on freshly squeezed juices.

Breakfasts are a leisurely affair with a good selection of buffet and cooked to order options.  Local newspapers are at hand whilst you sip another another cup of spiced chai tea.

Trinity is the second offering by Malabar Escapes for stylish, boutique accommodation in Cochin. Situated diagonally across the Parade Ground from Malabar House, Trinity is a much smaller property, currently with only three rooms. There are plans to develop and build more rooms together with a swimming pool but this will take time – it is India! Not really a hotel but more a cluster of rooms leading off a central first floor room which doubles as reception and communal lounge.

    Alcove Art

The instantly recognisable use of colour and objects of art give the place character synonymous with the Malabar Escapes properties. However, it is fair to say that Trinity has a more modern twist than Malabar House or Privacy. Bold splashes of vibrant colour and a contemprary feel sit happily alongside traditional Keralan art and the historic setting. Infact, the building itself was once the offices of the Dutch East India Company and the monogram on the gateway is dated 1740. I was a little apprehensive when we stayed in September 2010, not sure if the combination would work. It did and we loved it.

One thing to bear in mind is that all meals are taken at the Malabar House which is a two minute walk away.

Location

Facing the Parade Ground and a two minute walk away from Malabar House, Trinity is very well located in central Cochin. This is one of my favourite spots in Cochin. The Parade Ground is always buzzing with local activity: boys plaing cricket and football, a class of schoolchildren having a lesson under the shade of a tree, or as on our last visit which coincided with monsoon rains, cattle wallowing in pools of water. All, completely fascinating.

Cinnamon, one of the best design and lifestyle shops in India, is situated on the ground floor of the building. Trinity is also just around the corner from ‘Fab India’, a must for Indian home decorations and local style clothes. Gorgeous.

Trinity is 45 km from Cochin airport and takes around 1 hour to transfer by car.

Facilities

Although Trinity has a reception area, there is no restaurant or bar. These are available at Malabar House.
Guests at Trinity can avail of all the facilities at Malabar House including the swimming pool and Ayurvedic Spa. Bicycles can be hired free of charge and walking maps are available to help discover the area. Money changing can also be provided at Malabar House.

Accommodation

Just three suites make up Trinity. All are contemporary in design whilst being furnished with antiques and selected pieces of Indian art and design. Very stylish indeed. My favourite is the Red Room – the outdoor bathroom is enormous and I particularly liked the shower ‘tray’ constructed from a large traditional cooking vessel.

The red room, the largest room, A/C, patio terrace with open ‘garden’ bathroom, TV, mini bar , original lithograph of M.F. Hussain, additional mezzanine bed, DVD player
The blue room, A/C, additional mezzanine bed, TV, DVD player , open ‘garden’ bathroom, contemporary Indian art
The yellow room, A/C, open patio, TV, DVD player , separate dressing area, contemporary tribal art and photography

Dining

All meals are taken at Malabar House which is very close by, just two minutes walk.

Malabar junction, the gourmet restaurant is a crossroads of tradition and innovation, of South India and the West. Specialising in market fresh food, this is reputed to be one of the finest seafood restaurants in the South.  Having eaten here on several ocassions I would tend to agree.

I would also recommend the lunch time Thalis, vegetarian Thalis (an assortment of several dishes) are particularly popular in this area.

Breakfast is a combination of fresh fruits, breads, pastries, eggs, bacon and a local speacial which tends to change on a daily basis.  I loved the dosas.

Divine, the wine lounge and Tapas bar located on the first floor overlooking the courtyard.  This is a first in historic Cochin and for me, epitamises the style of Malabar Escapes.  A funky modern space with glossy red bar stools is the setting for a fabulous range of  wines and tapas.  Try the degustation of tapas with wines carefully selected to match the flavours of the food.  Yet the style is still India and down below in the candle lit courtyard, cultural perofrmances are held to complete this unique  ambience.  Fabulous.

An 18th-century Dutch colonial residence which has been converted into a small luxury boutique style hotel, the Malabar House has retained its calm spaciousness. Based in the historical centre of Fort Cochin, it faces the St Francis Church, the oldest European church in India. Painted in heartening yellows and whites and furnished with antiques and artwork, the Malabar House is a haven of tranquillity amidst a bustling harbour city. Outside, you can almost smell the centuries of imperial trade: Portuguese forts, Dutch and British churches, Chinese fishing nets and Jewish shops selling local spices and fabrics.

Location

Great central location in the heart of historic Fort Cochin, facing the Parade Ground which always has something interesting going on, be it a cricket or football game or just the locals ‘hanging out’.  All the major attractions of Fort Cochin are within easy walking distance and the St. Francis church is just opposite.  The famous Chinese Fishing nets are a three minute walk away.

Accommodation

17 individually furnished rooms which include Deluxe, roof garden suite and the Malabar suite.  All rooms are stylishly presented and include antique furnishings and selected objects of Indian art and design.  It is this fusion of colour, traditional and contemporary design that makes Malabar Escapes properties so unique and so stylish.  We absolutely love it – India with a twist!

All rooms have the following amenities:

Air conditioning
Cable TV
Telephone
Mini Bar
Coffee Maker
Wi-Fi Internet
Safe Deposit Box

Dining

Malabar Junction: a multi cuisine restaurant offering international and Indian cuisine along with seafood speciality.  This is renowned to be one of the best restaurants in South India and I wouldn’t disagree.  The menu is varied and lives up to expectations.  We recommend the Lunchtime Thali, particularly the Vegetarian Thali which is popular in this area of India.  Breakfasts offer a combination of fresh fruits, eggs, bacon, pastries and local specialities which we do recommend you try – especially the breakfast Dosa.

Divine’: the wine lounge. Funky, modern bar serving a range of wines and tapas but somehow managing to retain that unique Malabar Escapes Indian style.  Fab.  Try the degustation wine and tapas.

More than a century ago, George Brunton & Sons set up a boat-building facility in Cochin which grew to become one of the biggest ship-builders in the country. Records show that the British used some of the ships built here during World War II. On the very same site, many years after the boatyard was shut down, Brunton Boatyard was built – effortlessly recreating the splendour of the city’s illustrious past. For what is essentially an intimate sea-facing property, the Brunton Boatyard possesses a remarkable sense of scale and takes you back in time to the days of the British Raj.

A bio-diverse region spread across 2,132 square kilometers on the lofty Western Ghats, Wayanad is one of the few districts in Kerala that has been able to retain its pristine nature. Hidden away in the hills of this land are some of the oldest tribes, as yet untouched by civilization. And the very first prehistoric engravings in Kerala discovered in the foothills of Edakkal and around Ambukuthimala bear testimony to a pre-historic culture dating back to the Mesolithic Age. Strikingly scenic, it is known for its sub-tropical savannahs, picturesque hill stations, sprawling spice plantations, luxuriant forests and rich cultural traditions. A holistic confluence of wilderness, history and culture, Wayanad is located on the southern tip of the magnificent Deccan plateau.

Landscapes as diverse as savannahs, wooded hills and evergreen forests, all rolled into one place – Wayanad, make it a truly special destination. The district also has a history as interesting as its landscape. It is believed that human life existed here from as early as 4000 BC. The rock carvings and caves of Ambukuthimala substantiate this belief. Large plantations of tea, coffee and spices can be seen here. Lush green paddy fields, from which Wayanad has derived its name (Vayal meaning paddy fields and Naad meaning village) add to its magnificence.

Things to see

Muthanga Wildlife Park Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary, also known as the Wayanad Sanctuary, is situated on the way from Mysore to Sulthan Bathery. The Sanctuary is spread over an area of around 344 sq. km and one can find animals like sloth bears, sambhar, elephants, monkeys, tigers, reptiles, deer, panthers etc. There are many species of rare birds in this sanctuary as well. The Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary is most famous for its ‘project elephant’ site, where herds of elephants are seen roaming freely, frolicking in the mud and the water near the water holes.

Edakkal Caves Edakkal Caves are located at about a 25 km drive from Kalpetta and at a distance of 3 km from Ambalavayal. The Caves are famous for their exceptional rock art depicting human and animal figure carvings by Neolithic and later civilizations. Edakkal Caves were created by a fissure due to changing climatic conditions and the split in the rock is about 22 ft. in width and 90 ft. in length. The gap in the rocks extends to over 30 ft appearing as a cave to the observer. The caves can be reached through trekking trails within the forested area starting at Edakkal and the best time to visit the caves is during the morning.

Chembra Peak Chembra Peak, the highest peak in Wayanad, stands at a height of around 2100 metres above sea level. At a distance of 14 km from Kalpetta, the Chembra Peak is a part of the Wayanad hill ranges in the Western Ghats, adjoining the Nilgiri Hills in Tamil Nadu and Vellarimala in Kozhikode district in Kerala. The elevation makes it an ideal spot for trekking and mountain climbing. The District Tourism Promotion Council provides guides and trekking equipments on hire charges to the tourists. A heart shaped lake en route to the top of the peak is a major tourist attraction. It is believed that the lake has never dried up, even during the hottest of summers. For those seeking some adventure, temporary camps are set up on the top of the peak. Guides, camping apparatus etc are provided by the District Tourism Promotion Council on rent to tourists who are interested in camping. The Chembra Peak is undisputedly one of the most favoured trekking destinations; the breathtaking view from the top is sure to offer the traveller a spectacle worth more than all the hardship undergone while climbing. The picturesque Lake on the hill is an ideal picnic spot. Since it takes almost a day to reach the top of the hill, tourists can spend a day or two in the temporary camps.
